Historic Hall Restoration 12 - Restoring the Bell Tower

A recent project we have been working on is the restoration of Brackenhurst Main Hall in Southwell, Nottinghamshire

Continuing the restoration of the bell tower, now that the lead paint had been removed other works could begin. The oxidized cupola (or copper dome) was first removed, and the inner wooden structure rebuilt so the shiny new cupola would sit correctly. Travelling downwards, the arched section housing the bell was repainted in modern standardized paint and a brand-new frame for the bell was created. The original metal frame as well as the wood holding the bell in place had become very dilapidated and had to be restored or replaced. The trunk of the tower was also cladded in new lead.
